Can the Sun Damage Your Teeth?

Can the Sun Damage Your Teeth? When talking about sunburns, you are likely thinking about areas such as your back, arms, and shoulders. We are almost certain that the last thing on your mind is how sunburn affects your teeth. Yes, it sounds crazy at first, but it's true!

How Sunburnt Lips Leads To Dangers For Your Teeth

No, the sun doesn't burn your teeth unless you are making a wide smile directly at the sun, eyes closed, for hours on end- please don't try this. We are talking about how sunburnt teeth can lead to problems with your teeth.

What's the last thing you want to do to a sunburnt area? If you answered, “touch it”, then that is a common answer and what we are leading up to. Your mouth in its neutral state is closed with your lips touching together. Naturally, this is going to lead people to choose to keep their mouths open until the sunburn is resolved which leads to a dry mouth.

A dry mouth is dangerous for your teeth because it allows bacteria to build quickly and stick to your teeth without the resistance of saliva or liquid; saliva production is important for controlling plaque on your teeth. It becomes worse when you have the habit of consuming sugary beverages since that sugar is stuck to your teeth more so than it would be without a dry mouth.

For quick, temporary sunburn relief, you can soak a towel in ice water, squeeze most of the water out and hold it to your lips. Ibuprofen is also helpful when it comes to reducing inflammation. You can also try eating Greek yogurt to put a film around your lips - protecting the nerves a bit and providing some relief.
